The Yugas & the Precession of the Equinoxes

Bejoy Satheesan has given me permission to publish an exchange he had with PNB regarding her seeing of the Vedic Yugas:

Namaste Mata Patrizia Norelli Bachelet,

I have been browsing vigoursouly in the internet for valuable info that might lead to unravel the mysteries of this Universe and one very important key word that made me pause was your name - Mata Patrizia Norelli Bachelet.

Your thesis on the precession of equinoxes and the measurement of the Yugas made me do some research myself and even though I am not feeling confident to talk to a person like you who is an master on the subject, let me pen these simple mathematical findings for your evaluation and feedback.

You contrasted the opinion of the general world that the Vedic idea of Yuga which is 4320000* years in fact must be interpreted as arc seconds.

Let me join you on that.

Its said that the equinox precess approximately 50 arc seconds per earth year. So it would take 86400 earth years to precess 4320000 arc seconds ( which is [1200 degress ) ....

* Bejoy has figured one too many zeros figure for the yuga. The Yugas and Bejoy's calculations/error will be addressed in 'Comments' to this post.

Thea (PNB) gave the following response to Bejoy and asked me to address his calculations (see 'Comments' on this exchange)

Dear Bejoy,

I need to clarify from the beginning that I truly believe what we have inherited from the Middle Ages regarding the Yugas is not really the way things ARE out there. Somehow this 'tradition' got established and passed on, just like the wrong calendar in use based on the Nirayana (sidereal) system. These things get established by some authority or another; and then everyone goes on repeating them, and the errors compound. The situation has reached the absurd point where it is believed that Kaliyuga will last 432,000 years!

What was important in the formulation from the beginning, in my view, was the Divine Measure of 432,000. That is the key. And then multiples of that Measure. However, there is a method that is far more accurate and can help you to really understand these vast movement, all the way down to our own times. Moreover, the system I offer is based on the Hindu Line of Ten Avatars; so straightaway a very important part of the Tradition is brought up to date and made valid. No one has done this to my knowledge. These are just quaint tales, as far as Hindus are concerned - and in this I include the Gurus and Pundits who should know better. No one can give you PRECISION. But without precision the cosmic harmonies make no sense.

If you want to learn about these things, please join our Preparatory Study Group which is starting up now. Several of my pupils are providing teaching for those who have just come upon my work and wish to enter deeper studies, but for which there must be a preparation. I encourage you to take this first step. You will not regret it.

Blessings, Thea (Patrizia Norelli-Bachelet)

Dear Bejoy, Mata Patrizia asked me to address your calculations (since she is so busy), and I would be happy to be of assistance:

The traditional timescale of the yugas is as follows:

Satya Yuga or Krita Yuga - 1,728,000 years

Treta Yuga - 1,296,000 years

Dvapara Yuga - 864,000 years

Kali Yuga - 432,000 years

The Total of all this adds up to 4,320,000 years (or 10 Kali Yugas). And that is what is generally taken to be a complete cycle of the Yugas.

What Mata Patrizia is suggesting is that the figure of the Kali Yuga 432,000 (also the radius of the Sun) is the measurement that needs to be first understood in arcseconds. From that re-adjustment in seeing, everything else becomes clear. Then the Kali Yuga is seen as 120 degrees of the circle - one third or 120 degrees of the Precession of the Equinoxes (or 4 Astrological Ages).

With this adjustment, the Kali Yuga needs to be seen as a Unit... like the number ONE is a unit in the circle of NINE numbers (as in the Enneagram and as portrayed in Mata Patrizia's Gnostic Circle - see http://aeongroup.com/gc.htm). When one adds up 1 + 2 + 3 + 4, one gets the figure 10. But if one understands the Laws of the Circle, by which the Circle is equivalent to NINE (not 10), then one understands that it is 2 + 3 + 4 Yugas that must be the calculation of the Cycle. This knowledge is contained in the 432,000 figure itself. There is no ONE in the figure. There is only the 2 the 3 and the 4 accompanied by three ZEROS's.

The reason you have come up with 3 and 1/3 revolutions (Precessions) in your calculations, is that you have not 'seen' yet that the Kali Yuga functions as a 'Hidden One.' When you understand that, I think everything will fall into place. Then one sees that the system of the Yugas are describing THREE Precessions or 3 x 25,920 years.

Does this make any sense to you? It's all about understanding the language of the Circle. It's language is 9. It's 9 Integers are One Unit each. Please let me know if there is anyway I can assist your comprehension in these matters.

Respectfully, Lori Tompkins

PS. This from Wikipedia (I was the one who put these figures on the Wiki page), perhaps it needs more clarification, because as it is, it seems to lead one to the calculations you made.

'According to this formula for the yugas:

Kali Yuga = 8640 years (one third of the precession or 4 astrological

Dwapar Yuga (Two Kali Yuga) = 17,280 years (two thirds of the
precession or 8 astrological ages)
Treta Yuga (Three Kali Yuga) = 25,920 years (one precession of the

Satya Yuga (Four Kali Yuga) = 34,560 years (one and a third of the precession of the equinoxes)
Norelli-Bachelet's teachings on the yuga, presented in her book "The Gnostic Circle" in 1972.'

Bejoy's 31 October 2006 response:

Dear Lori,
I must say that I am highly grateful for the comprehensive reply given by you. Your feedback actually gave me fresh perspectives on the subject.Really thankful for that.

I infact got all the info from Wiki as I was browsing the net. I am open to your suggestion to blog it as that will increase more awareness on the subject and we inturn will be fortunate to get more invaluable inputs from others. Lets keep blogging.

Many thanks, Bejoy C.S.
